This beautiful loggerhead turtle introduced me to a lovely group of like-minded ocean swimmers. In the coastal town of Rethymno, Crete, I took a little dip in a local swim spot and was lucky to see this turtle two days in a row. I dove down, taking photos and video with my GoPro camera. One day as I was leaving, I got in a conversation with a couple of the ladies in a mix of Greek, English, and interpretive dance as they explained to me that they feared the turtle because they had heard of someone going to the hospital for a turtle bite. We shared stories and laughed together, and it reminded me of how open water swimming communities can be some of the most amazing groups.
