The seagrass meadow, or seagrass habitat is a very important marine ecosystem. In La Jolla, the seagrass meadows are mostly eel grass, and yes, there are eels in there, I’ve seen one! Seagrasses are important carbon sinks that can help mitigate human-caused climate change. They provide protection and nutrients for sea life and protect coastlines from erosion. Seagrass habitats are home to so many different marine animals! Although threatened, a recent discovery of a hybrid seagrass may provide hope for restoration of this highly important ecosystem.
