The Intertidal Zone (such as tidepools) is an important transitional ecosystem that protects coastlines from erosion and provides a nursing area for marine animals. In the intertidal zone, life fluctuates from being underwater at high tide and exposed to the air and sun at low tide. This zone provides a nutritional link between the ocean, and land and air animals like mammals and birds. For humans, it provides an excellent fishing area, tourism and recreation, as well as unique opportunities for research.
